Khettaras in Morocco
The underground well system is more than worth to see

The lunar landscape of the Wells of Khettaras

Well, this is only roughly a natural attraction as this well-system is definitely manmade, however it gives its landscape an extremely unique sight, something you wouldn’t believe you see in Morocco at all. Khettaras is an underground well- system that is called qanat in Arabic and this one is one of the oldest still standing qanat. This system basically aims the usage of underground water, for plant irrigation and for the locals as a drinking water. The plain sight of this well-system from the outside makes you think you’ve been transported to a different planet. The Khettara wells are located on a plain terrain but you can see the beautiful mountain chains of the Atlas surrounding the region. It is really an unbelievable sight and something you ought to check out if you are interested in extraordinary landscapes.

This system if very old and is still very necessary, especially in the deserted regions of Morocco where modern amenities will remain lacking for a long time.

If you have a guide or you are travelling with a guided tour you also get the chance to take a look at the underground water – supply system by actually going underground. You will be able to walk cozily in these tunnels as these were specifically built to accommodate people who were carrying water underground to protect themselves from the strong heat outside. Try this alonestanding experience once you are in the area, this is some of the most unique experiences Morocco offers.

How to get there:
So, this time I won't be able to give you instructions as clear as before.. as this is about something really lesser known and having lesser popularity but all local desert guides know about the Ancient Wells and will be happy to show them to you. Always agree on the prize in advance though!

The Wells of Khettaras are located near Erfoud and its visit is already integrated in some desert tours, being organized especially from Marrakech or Errachidia. I would not suggest you to get there alone, as the wells are located literally in the middle of nothing.

Closing words:
